Proof Sets

Proof Sets were first produced in 1936, although proof coins have been individually struck as early as 1856. The term "proof" refers to how the coin is produced, rather than a grade/condition. Highly polished and frequently cleaned dies strike a cleaned and polished planchet at least twice at higher-than-normal pressure, resulting in sharp and high-relief details.
