The Washington Quarter was introduced in 1932 and was originally intended as a commemorative coin to mark the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth. However, the coin's success grew and it became a regular-issue coin in 1934. Originally 90% silver, the composition of the Washington Quarter was changed to a copper-nickel alloy in 1965. In 1999, production of the Washington Quarter was suspended to enable the launch of the Statehood Quarter program.
